The Final Climb!

The climb to the peak (5,895 meters = 19,340 feet!) began as a queue lining up from base camp practically to the summit.  We got in line around midnight, and did our best to cut to the front.  The trek was straight uphill on frozen scree, and there was a Family Circus dotted trail of headlights making its way to the summit.  The moon was practically full, lending an eerie light to the vague outline of already imposing rock formations.  The higher we climbed the more the altitude dulled our senses, until we were merely single minded biological robots programmed to go up.  A lightning storm boiled away below us; each flash of lightning shocked us into an awareness of our surroundings, the fog surrounding our senses lifted enough for us to question why we were climbing up this stupid pile of rocks, and the thunder authoritatively answered "just shut up and keep walking".
